Church bells peal for San Pedro Calungsod’s canonization

SAN PABLO City, Oct. 21, 2012—Church bells in all parishes of San Pablo diocese will be ringing to echo the joy of thanksgiving in time for San Pedro Calungsod’s canonization on Sunday.
San Pablo Bishop Leo M. Drona in a text instruction to all parish priests, pastors and religious in more than 80 Catholic parishes in Laguna said “as a sign of the diocese of San Pablo’s thanksgiving for the canonization of San Pedro Calungsod, the bishop…is requesting that bells be rung at all churches in the diocese for at least three minutes on Sunday (October 21) at 4 p.m.”
According to wikipedia, Pedro Calungsod was born in 1654 and died on 2 April 1672. He was a young Roman Catholic Filipino migrant, sacristan and missionary catechist, who along with Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores, suffered religious persecution and martyrdom in Guam for their missionary work in 1672.
It added that, while in Guam, Calungsod preached Christianity to the Chamorro people through catechism, while baptizing both infants, children and adults at the risk and expense of being persecuted and eventually murdered. Through Calungsod and San Vitores‘ missionary efforts, many native Chamorros converted to Roman Catholicism. (Fr. Romy Ponte)

Fluvial Parade of the Child King

It has been a tradition to have the image of the Child Jesus visit His parents before His grand day. The icon will be leaving His home in the Basilica del Sto. Niño which is in the heart of Cebu City and will be paraded to His foster father in the St. Joseph Parish in Mandaue City, another city next to His domicile. A great number of dynamic and lively devotees will be following the Infant, as He make His way, once a year, to His father Joseph. The Niño stays with His father for a day and a night, while believers from nearby cities and municipalities can join with Jesus’ celebration and have a vigil in the parish. After an overnight stay with His father, He will be voyaging His way to His mother in a nearby island in Lapu-Lapu. The ceremonies in Cebu begin with this early morning fluvial procession, reenacting the coming of the Spaniards. The Holy Child Jesus is usually kept in a glass case bedecked with blossoming flowers, which will be carried by...
