NOT EVEN A PLACARD by Quinzo

Source: https://quinzo.wordpress.com/2013/01/30/686/ So let us start right there and then, how would I react to the recent conviction of Carlos Celdran to the offense against religious sentiments?                   I’m not sure how would I say it, but I’m one of those who were deeply offended by what he did inside the Manila Cathedral. I would never mind anyone protesting against any government institution or against any religious denomination for that matter so long as it lies within the bounds of decency, sensitivity and well maybe formality. Had he carried the placard carrying the name “Damaso” at the gate of the church or even within the premises of the church, I would just have shrugged my shoulder off. It would have been a decent and formal protest by him if not sensitive. Had he done it in those places, I wouldn’t have mind hearing him shouting his protest, criticism and ...

Tagle Consoled By Pope’s Trust

By RAYMUND F. ANTONIO October 25, 2012, 7:23pm MANILA, Philippines --- “It both consoles and terrifies me.” This was how Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle described his feelings and the tasks that await him after Pope Benedict XVI named him a cardinal, along with five other archbishops from various countries. “I am consoled by the trust and love that the Pope shows to me, to the Archdiocese of Manila, and indeed to the whole Church in the Philippines,” Tagle said. “He wants to hear us and to benefit from our experiences of faith and mission. I am also consoled by the assurances of prayer and support from so many people,” he added. Tagle, head of the country’s largest archdiocese, is among those who will receive the red hat in a consistory that will take place on November 24. The Pope appointed Tagle to the College of Cardinals along with five other archbishops from different countries. He, however, said it is not going to be a walk in the park though because...

Manila Archbishop Tagle to become world's second youngest cardinal

(Updated 8:13 a.m., October 25)  Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle will be among the six non-European Roman Catholic prelates who will join the Vatican's College of Cardinals in November, Pope Benedict XVI announced Wednesday. At 55, Tagle will become the world's second youngest cardinal and has been touted as a future papal contender. Cardinals advise the pontiff and elect his successor among themselves upon his death. The newest group of appointees will bring the total number of cardinals world-wide to 120. The other new cardinals will be the American James Michael Harvey, Lebanon's Bechara Boutros Rahi, India's Baselios Cleemis, Nigeria's John Onaiyekan and Colombia's Ruben Salazar Gomez. Cleemis, at 53, will be the youngest cardinal. The  CBCP News website  mistakenly said that Tagle would be the world's youngest cardinal. The site also said that Tagle will now be the seventh cardinal in the Church’s history in the Philippines. The other cardinal...

Manila Archbishop not among new cardinals

by Paterno Esmaquel II MANILA, Philippines - Contrary to predictions, Pope Benedict XVI did not include newly-installed Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio “Chito” Tagle in the list of soon-to-be cardinals that the Pope revealed on Friday, Jan 6, 2012. Benedict XVI announced the names of the 22 new cardinals after his Mass for the Feast of the Epiphany , more popularly known in the Philippines as the feast of the Three Kings, held in Vatican City. The appointed prelates will begin their assignments once the Pope holds an assembly of cardinals, called a consistory , in February. Tagle’s appointment as Manila archbishop had raised hopes that he will become the fourth living cardinal from the Philippines, following in the footsteps of his predecessor Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales. The big news from the Philippines has been the October 13 appointment of Luis Antonio Tagle as the new Archbishop of Manila, putting him in line to become a cardinal the next time Benedict...
