VATICAN, Oct. 25, 2012 (CNS) — The Filipino cardinal announced Oct. 24 is widely lauded for his theological gifts and his humility. Cardinal-designate Luis Tagle, 55, o f Manila, Philippines, “really takes care of people … he’s so simple and generous and there’s no class structure when he deals with people; everyone is equal in his eyes,” said Nemie Anciado, a longtime custodian at the cathedral in Imus, Philippines, where the cardinal-designate was bishop from 2001 to 2011. Anciado spoke to Catholic News Service in October 2011, after his bishop was named archbishop of Manila. One year later, Pope Benedict XVI announced he would make him a cardinal in a consistory at the Vatican Nov. 24. Cardinal-designate Tagle told CNS Oct. 24 that the month of October, which is the month of the rosary, “is big for me.” He was informed in October 2001 that he would become a bishop and was told he’d be transferred to Manila in October 2011. “And now it’s October again,” he said, laughing. ...

ANTONIO October 25, 2012, 7:23pm MANILA, Philippines --- “It both consoles and terrifies me.” This was how Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle described his feelings and the tasks that await him after Pope Benedict XVI named him a cardinal, along with five other archbishops from various countries. “I am consoled by the trust and love that the Pope shows to me, to the Archdiocese of Manila, and indeed to the whole Church in the Philippines,” Tagle said. “He wants to hear us and to benefit from our experiences of faith and mission. I am also consoled by the assurances of prayer and support from so many people,” he added. Tagle, head of the country’s largest archdiocese, is among those who will receive the red hat in a consistory that will take place on November 24. (Updated 8:13 a.m., October 25)  Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle will be among the six non-European Roman Catholic prelates who will join the Vatican's College of Cardinals in November, Pope Benedict XVI announced Wednesday. At 55, Tagle will become the world's second youngest cardinal and has been touted as a future papal contender. Cardinals advise the pontiff and elect his successor among themselves upon his death. The newest group of appointees will bring the total number of cardinals world-wide to 120. The other new cardinals will be the American James Michael Harvey, Lebanon's Bechara Boutros Rahi, India's Baselios Cleemis, Nigeria's John Onaiyekan and Colombia's Ruben Salazar Gomez. Cleemis, at 53, will be the youngest cardinal. The  CBCP News website  mistakenly said that Tagle would be the world's youngest cardinal.
