Cardinal-designate "Chito" known in Philippines for Theology, humility

VATICAN, Oct. 25, 2012 (CNS) — The Filipino cardinal announced Oct. 24 is widely lauded for his theological gifts and his humility. Cardinal-designate Luis Tagle, 55, o f Manila, Philippines, “really takes care of people … he’s so simple and generous and there’s no class structure when he deals with people; everyone is equal in his eyes,” said Nemie Anciado, a longtime custodian at the cathedral in Imus, Philippines, where the cardinal-designate was bishop from 2001 to 2011. Anciado spoke to Catholic News Service in October 2011, after his bishop was named archbishop of Manila. One year later, Pope Benedict XVI announced he would make him a cardinal in a consistory at the Vatican Nov. 24. Cardinal-designate Tagle told CNS Oct. 24 that the month of October, which is the month of the rosary, “is big for me.” He was informed in October 2001 that he would become a bishop and was told he’d be transferred to Manila in October 2011. “And now it’s October again,” he said, laughing.

Tagle Consoled By Pope’s Trust

By RAYMUND F. ANTONIO October 25, 2012, 7:23pm MANILA, Philippines --- “It both consoles and terrifies me.” This was how Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle described his feelings and the tasks that await him after Pope Benedict XVI named him a cardinal, along with five other archbishops from various countries. “I am consoled by the trust and love that the Pope shows to me, to the Archdiocese of Manila, and indeed to the whole Church in the Philippines,” Tagle said. “He wants to hear us and to benefit from our experiences of faith and mission. I am also consoled by the assurances of prayer and support from so many people,” he added. Tagle, head of the country’s largest archdiocese, is among those who will receive the red hat in a consistory that will take place on November 24. The Pope appointed Tagle to the College of Cardinals along with five other archbishops from different countries. He, however, said it is not going to be a walk in the park though because

SAN PABLO City, Oct. 21, 2012—Church bells in all parishes of San Pablo diocese will be ringing to echo the joy of thanksgiving in time for San Pedro Calungsod’s canonization on Sunday. San Pablo Bishop Leo M. Drona in a text instruction to all parish priests, pastors and religious in more than 80 Catholic parishes in Laguna said “as a sign of the diocese of San Pablo’s thanksgiving for the canonization of San Pedro Calungsod, the bishop…is requesting that bells be rung at all churches in the diocese for at least three minutes on Sunday (October 21) at 4 p.m.” According to wikipedia, Pedro Calungsod was born in 1654 and died on 2 April 1672. Pope Benedict XVI: Canonization Homily (full text)

The Son of Man came to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (cf. Mk 10:45)  Dear Brother Bishops, Dear brothers and sisters! Today the Church listens again to these words of Jesus, spoken by the Lord during his journey to Jerusalem, where he was to accomplish the mystery of his passion, death and resurrection. They are words which enshrine the meaning of Christ’s mission on earth, marked by his sacrifice, by his total self-giving. On this third Sunday of October, on which we celebrate World Mission Sunday, the Church listens to them with special attention and renews her conviction that she should always be fully dedicated to serve mankind and the Gospel, after the example of the One who gave himself up even to the sacrifice of his life. I extend warm greetings to all of you who fill Saint Peter’s Square, especially the official delegations and the pilgrims who have come to celebrate the seven new saints. I greet with affection the Cardinals and Bishops who, during these

Statement on RH Bill by Cebu Archbishop Jose S. Palma

Every birth is a gift from God; every new life, a blessing, every birth a cause for rejoicing and praising God who create new life only out of love. Our country’s positive birth rate and a population composed of mostly young people are the main players that fuel the economy. A fact that even the government itself acknowledges as it is determined to feed, educate and keep the young people healthy. And rightly so, for even our Constitution acknowledges that human resource is a primary source of social and economic force. Earlier this year, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas reported that the hard-earned salaries of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) that were sent to their families for the first 11 months last year amounted to $18.3 billion, which is 7.3 percent increase in the same period in 2010. Filipino men and women who endure the travails of working in foreign soil play a significant role in propping up our economy. The country’s robust population is a big push to our ec

Pastoral Letter on the Year of Faith by Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Tagle (Archbishop of Manila)

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Pope Benedict XV, in his Apostolic Letter Porta Fidei, announced a Year of Faith that will begin on October 11, 2012 and conclude on November 24, 2013, the Solemnity of Christ the King.  The whole Church is invited to celebrate the precious gift of faith, to receive it again and to transmit it joyfully.  Our beloved Archdiocese of Manila is one with the Church worldwide in welcoming the Year of Faith. The Rationale for the Year of Faith The date of the opening of the Year of Faith was chosen carefully.  It also partly explains the Pope’s intentions.  October 11, 2012 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council (1962) and the twentieth anniversary of the promulgation of the catechism of the Catholic Church (1992).  The significance of these two events determines considerably the spirit of the Year of Faith. In our time, the Second Vatican Council is the great moment of renewal in faith.  Blessed John XXI

The kinds of tortures I saw: the first torture that constitutes hell is the loss of God; the second is perpetual remorse of conscience; the third is that one’s condition will never change; the fourth is the fire that will penetrate the soul without destroying it – a terrible suffering, since it is a purely spiritual fire, lit by God’s anger; the fifth torture is continual darkness and a terrible suffocating smell, and, despite the darkness, the devils and the souls of the damned see each other and all the evil, both of others and their own; the sixth torture is the constant company of Satan; the seventh torture is horrible despair, hatred of God, vile words, curses and blasphemies. "These are the tortures suffered by all the damned together, but that is not the end of the sufferings.

FULL TEXT OF POPE BENEDICT XVI'S HOMILY AT MASS OPENING FOR YEAR OF FAITH

Photo Credit: 100% Katolikong Pinoy Dear Brother Bishops, Dear Brothers and Sisters Today, fifty years from the opening of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, we begin with great joy the Year of Faith. I am delighted to greet all of you, particularly His Holiness Bartholomaois I, Patriarch of Constantinople, and His Grace Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury. A special greeting goes to the Patriarchs and Major Archbishops of the Eastern Catholic Churches, and to the Presidents of the Bishops’ Conferences. In order to evoke the Council, which some present had the grace to experience for themselves – and I greet them with particular affection – this celebration has been enriched by several special signs: the opening procession, intended to recall the memorable one of the Council Fathers when they entered this Basilica; the enthronement of a copy of the Book of the Gospels used at the Council; the consignment of the seven final Messages of the Council, and of the Catechism
