Cardinal Brady Congratulates New Irish Nuncio

ROME, JAN. 10, 2012 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI on Friday presided over the episcopal consecration of Monsignor Charles Brown as archbishop. He will now take up his new post as papal nuncio to Ireland.

Following the ceremony Cardinal Seán Brady, archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, said: "I am very pleased to be in Rome today, the Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ, with Cardinal Desmond Connell, Bishop Noel Treanor and Bishop Donal McKeown, to attend the episcopal ordination of Monsignor Charles Brown, the recently appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland."

He also thanked the Pope for having appointed Archbishop Brown to Ireland. Prior to his appointment the newly-ordained nuncio had worked in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith since 1994.

Cardinal Brady added that he wished Archbishop Brown many blessings in his new role.

"I am confident that he will do excellent work in both forging strong and fruitful diplomatic links between Ireland and the Holy See to the mutual advantage of both States, and, in the promotion of renewal of the Church in Ireland," he said.

Blessed Pedro Calungsod "The 2nd Filipino Saint"

Pedro Calungsod was a 17th century teenage catechist of the Jesuit mission in the Marianas. On April 2, 1672 he was killed for his faith together with Bl. Diego San Luis Vitoris, SJ in Guam. The canonization process for Pedro Calungsod started on June 25, 1998. On March 5, 2000 he was declared a "beatus". On December 19, 2011 a miracle through his intercession was approved. I am delighted to greet all of you, particularly His Holiness Bartholomaois I, Patriarch of Constantinople, and His Grace Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury.
