January 2, 2012. (Romereports.com) Tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square to celebrate the year's first Angelus along with the pope. After wishing them a blessed New Year, Benedict XVI asked them to pray for peace.

“I invite all of you to join me in praying earnestly for peace throughout the world, for reconciliation and forgiveness in areas of conflict, and for a more just and equitable distribution of the world’s resources.”
On January 1st, the Vatican celebrates World Day for Peace. This year, the pope highlighted the need to educate younger generations on justice and peace.

“It's necessary and urgent to educate new generations, giving them a solid and integral formation that includes moral and spiritual dimensions. In particular, I want to highlight those that deal with justice and peace.”
Among the thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square, there was a group that took part in a march for peace. The initiative was organized by the non-profit group- Community of St. Egidio. Those taking part walked through several local streets, before arriving at the Vatican.
